The ‘Moth-Eye Nano Pillars’ depict the structural surface of purified silicon, as seen through a scanning electron microscope. Chemically engineered to atomic level precision; purified silicon, with its parabolic moth-eye architecture and optical and electrical properties, is the foundation material for silicon microchips and solar power energies.  

 

After oxygen, silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth's atmosphere, and whilst silicates are present in both soda lime glass and porcelain, silicon's semiconductor capabilities has resulted in a global reliance on this high-powered metallic ruler. Discreetly performing inside electrical devices on wafer thin chips, silicon has allowed for revolutionary data flow, global connectivity, and the potential for a wholly collective consciousness.

The epic infrastructure encompassing these technologies, which are delicately choreographed for global consumption, pays no regard to the painful reality and brutality of mining and consuming raw materials. These extremely precise and complex nanotechnologies are engineered and produced to be repetitively manufactured. This sphere of ‘sophisticated engineering’ highlights how industrial operations can differ so dramatically, at mining sites lives are sacrificed for the global consumption of technological media, landscapes are destroyed, waters contaminated and bodies poisoned through toxic living environments. 

The ‘Moth-Eye Nano Pillars’, are aesthetically restrained, unemotional and carefully proportioned, bringing order under control. Both in the ‘Moth-Eye Nano Pillars’ and silicon wafer manufacturing, raw materials have undergone a transformation. Through the process of heating and cooling, their crystalline structures have been rearranged and altered to possess alternative material properties. The quasi-geological glass boulders rest upon the neatly arranged and cold porcelain contours. Representing the disruptive dust particles from wafer manufacturing, these boulders are not annealed and during rapid cooling, tension builds inside the crystalline rocks, containing the latent potential to explode at any point.
